Birthdays and Stars

Happy Birthday to Walter Koenig, and congratulations on his new star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Crewmates joined him for the ceremony.

And by the way, a belated happy 46th birthday to Star Trek itself.

Koenig is also featured in the new Star Trek web series Renegades, directed by Tim Russ and produced by Sky Conway, the team that created Of Gods and Men.  That Internet movie turned out to preview some themes of the big screen Star Trek JJA.

Renegades promises to explore the dark side of the human psyche.  And now the next Star Trek JJA movie reputedly has a title: Star Trek Into Darkness.  Another thematic mind-meld?

So we're all going dark now.  Didn't Star Trek used to be about light?  Fascinating?  No.  But it is interesting.  Or it is marketing anyway.

I just watched Of Gods and Men again. The acting really stands out, especially the stars: Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols and Alan Ruck.  Director Russ keeps it exciting, but these actors make it convincing.  So the pilot and the new series are intriguing possibilities.

Star Trek used to be about hope and enlightenment until Roddenberry died. Now it's about trends and focus groups. Not that I don't love the new movie and title, but it is sad in a way.

I think it's great that Star Trek fans are out there adding their voices to the Pantheon. Sorry to shamelessly promote my own stuff, but I too have created my own Star Trek off shoot. It's called Red Shirts and it's all about the little guys. It's a comedic take where the three Red Shirts go about their meaningless lives, shirk their duties, and struggle to survive away missions. Check us out at http://www.facebook.com/ShirtsofRed
